MISTER BEN COIFFURE
GHANAIAN HAIRDRESSER SETTLES IN MONTREAL
OFFERS HAIR DEALS ONE CANNOT RESIST
“I know you’ve heard it a thousand times before, but it’s true – hard work pays off. If you want to be good, you have to practice, practice, practice. If you don’t love something, then don’t do it.” – Ray Bradbury
From the first time I met Isaac Ben-Mensah, the owner of Mister Ben Coiffure, his love and exuberance for hair was overwhelming. He had a vision for what my hair could look like and saw himself as the man to make that happen. Ben, as he is more commonly known, was born in Ghana but later moved to London with a passion for purpose.
As a teenager in the 80’s, a little lost and not sure what he wanted to do with his life, Ben expressed an interest in learning a trade. His girlfriend at the time, a Beautician, had suggested he try hairdressing. After studying Cosmetology for two years and doing further training, he had clearly developed a real knack for it, thereby deciding to make it a career. Ever since, he’s been doing hair and loving it.
Ben has been practicing his craft professionally for quite a while and has the passport stamps to prove it. He’s not only traveled all over the world but has had the opportunity to work in many different cities across the globe. He started with two (2) years in London, then, went back to Africa where he spent three (3) years in Senegal and another three (3) years in Nigeria. He gained further experience for a year in Virginia and New York but went back to Africa for two and a half (2 ½) years, this time to Burkina Faso in the West. France called, so he left his mark on coiffures in Paris and Nantes for two (2) years before returning home to Africa, to Benin for four (4) years. Which brings us to present day, to Montreal where he has happily set up shop for the past two (2) years.
Ben specializes in hairdressing, but he works with stylists, as well as does body massages, barbering, hair and beauty counseling, stage and modeling shows. Every service is important to him not just one, but he can do a mean cut and colour. He cleverly promises that when you do things in a package, you get a deal of 30-40% off, rather than doing each thing separately.
As a hair connoisseur, he deals with all types and textures of hair of ALL ethnicities. For example, someone of African descent can enjoy a package including a relaxer, colour, treatment, cut, and style or those with naturally straight hair may be enticed by a highlight, colour, treatment, cut and style package. Other services at Mister Ben Coiffure include extensions, permanent straightening (Japanese) on Caucasian hair and tracks either for length or both body and length.
Stop by Mister Ben Coiffure in the hip Le Plateau area to get your Cosmetology needs from Tuesdays to Saturdays between 10 am and 7 pm. Although business has been steady, it’s been a bit difficult to gain maximum reach from his niche because of his location. According to Ben, “to draw the attention of people of African or Caribbean origin, I’m expected to be in a particular area. When they see me here, they don’t expect me to be doing what they require, and as a result, I don’t get them as much because they think I just do Caucasian hair”. Men, don’t forget he can hook you up too!
Well, Ben is here to prove that he can do it all and will not be put in a box or stereotyped. Just check him out on Facebook, call and set up an appointment and see for yourself! 🙂
